No possibility to amend Digital Security Act before election

There will be no chance to amend the much-talked about Digital Security Act before the upcoming national election, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said. The government will try to ensure that the law is not misused, he told reporters while replying to a question at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Tuesday.

Amid concerns from various quarters about freedom of expression, President Abdul Hamid signed the Digital Security Bill into a law on October 8. Obaidul, also the general secretary of Awami League, said the party has finalized its election manifesto. He said a decision about the formation of the election-time government will be made at a joint meeting of its central executive committee, advisory committee, and parliamentary board on October 26. The minister said one or two more ministers of the main opposition party might be included in the cabinet.

He said Barrister Mainul Hosein was arrested for his personal crime, not his involvement in the new coalition, Jatiya Oikya Front. Police arrested the former caretaker government adviser on Monday night in a case filed because of his remarks about journalist Masuda Bhatti.
