Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Prison Release Day today. He was released from the special prison in parliament building on June 11, 2008 after 11 months of long imprisonment. The current Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was arrested on July 16, 2007 during the 1/11-backed government. The then caretaker government was forced to release Sheikh Hasina in the face of constant pressure, uncompromising attitude and constant demands from other organs and affiliates, including Awami League. Since then, The Awami League has been celebrating the day as Sheikh Hasina’s day of prison release. Sheikh Hasina was arrested on 16july 2007 during an anti-corruption drive by the caretaker government led by Dr. Fakhruddin Ahmad. He was imprisoned for about 11 months in several cases. He was later released on eight weeks bail in the face of systematic agitation and protests and for better treatment. He went to the United States for treatment after his release. His temporary bail was extended by a few points while he was in the hospital. He was granted permanent bail on November 6, 2008.
Later, on 6th January 2009, the awami league led by him was formed with a historic victory in the national elections on 29th December 2008. After that, Awami League formed the government after winning elections in 2014 and 2018. Sheikh Hasina is also serving as the Prime Minister of the country for the fourth time, including for the third time.
